Pre-Launch
Edition.
Just over 2,000 miles from
the homeland - Hawaii - is the US 50th State. After a long
period of being a US colony it was allowed to have the full status
of Statehood in 1959.
This eight-island archipelago was
subjected to 'Americanisation' by three different groups during the
last 25 years of the Nineteenth Century (1875- ). The Missionaries.
The Sugar Planters. The Navy. All three having their own branded
agenda. Whilst Americans made up only about 2% of the
population, the mission schools prepared the remainder for
subjugation. The American business interests were well served
by the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce together with the Hawaiian Sugar
Planters' Association. The Navy set-up a coaling station in
1887 at Pearl Harbor. This made it not only a strategic
benefit to the US, but also an attractive resting spot for Naval
personnel.
Not only was sugar a key crop in
the arsenal of the islands, pineapples were also farmed and became
world famous. Whilst this was all happening more and more Japanese
and Filipino migrants arrived. The population by 1936 included
more than 1 in 4 of the migrants.
An area of outstanding natural beauty,
with active volcanoes, wonderful climate and beaches,
Hawaiians have an amazingly friendly and happy outlook. Do
they still have their own unique form of ballet?
